Competitive Sumo in Great Britain began in 1985 when the Japanese invited former Olmpian Syd Hoare to send a team to compete at Tokyo's Kokugikan. Since those early days, Great Britiain have had success at Sumo World Championships with Steve Pateman, Bill Etherington, Kevin Emslie and Adele Jones all winning medals.
